Site Selection Criteria

Selecting a suitable site for the sustainable social housing project requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure the project’s success and alignment with its goals:

• Beneficiaries in the Target Group:The chosen site should have the right set of potential beneficiaries which the program seeks to help. Thus, the area should be rural, even remote, where the people do not have access to many basic facilities within their communities. Inadequate housing is a prerequisite.
• Ownership of Suitable Location:The potential beneficiaries should own the land on which the homes are to be built, or alternatively, but eligible for land from the government to build their houses. Clear land title/ownership of the plot of land by the potential beneficiaries is essential. This should be confirmed by the Liaising Partner from the Panchayat.
• Environmental Impact:Assess the environmental impact of the site and ensure that the project adheres to sustainable construction practices. Consider factors like soil quality, drainage, and any potential environmental risks.
• Availability of Local Resources:The availability of local building materials and labour is to be assessed prior to acceptance of any project. Using locally sourced materials and employing community members as labor can contribute to economic sustainability and community engagement.
• Social Inclusivity:Analyze the site’s social dynamics and the potential for social inclusion. Consider factors like the site’s proximity to other communities, potential for community interaction, and mitigation of any existing social exclusion or discrimination.
• Financial Viability:Assess the overall cost of land acquisition, infrastructure development, and construction in the chosen site. It should align with the project’s budget and financial sustainability goals, considering the economic constraints of the target beneficiaries.
• Community Input:Involve the target beneficiaries and local community leaders in the site selection process. Their input and feedback can provide valuable insights and ensure that the chosen site resonates with the community’s needs and aspirations.
• Government and Regulatory Approvals:Verify that the selected site complies with local zoning regulations and government policies related to housing and development. Ensure that the necessary permits and approvals can be obtained.
